Michael DiTullo nos explica en design mind, el blog de frog design, cómo fue «la conversación» con un grupo de estudiantes de la Universidad de Cincinnati y cuáles fueron los temas abordados.
Sus conclusiones son directas y su experiencia es un gran ejemplo que explica lo que pasa cuando llevas a un profesional a la universidad o, entendido de otra manera más metafórica, cuando llevas una universidad a un profesional.
En este caso, DiTullo como profesional del diseño y la creatividad, se lanza a contar desde su experiencia y evitando cualquier academicismo (I didn’t want to talk to the students, but talk with them...) la situación actual de la profesión y el futuro que la depara.
Me parece especialmente sincero y motivador, y eso que sus frases incluyen conceptos como «problemas», «impredecible» o «caos». Pero es un diseñador que cree en sí mismo y en el resto de colegas de profesión. Eso ya es mucho.
There is no path to follow was the thrust of the conversation. Our field was founded by a diverse array of illustrators, engineers, and architects, and it will continue to be diverse. There will be no one right way to be a designer. It will be what we make it. This chaos will continue to be the beauty of our profession, as our motley band of creatives who are not artists, nor scientists, continue to solve problems and impact culture in unpredictable ways. We use non-linear thinking explained through stunningly visual and tactile media to convince linear thinkers to take risks they never would other wise. Our thinking is not easily understood but our solutions seem obvious afterward. Through chaos comes the auto-evangelical. This is our value.
To force our thinking into repeatable process destroys that value. To do our work, we do not need others to understand, instead we need them to understand that they do not understand. Through mutual respect and collaboration, we work together with other disciplines to make tomorrow.
